Before we begin...

If you're new here, welcome to Pepper.

Every week, I'll share a story about one of the 10 Mental Muscles that shape the way we live, work, parent and lead.

Because I believe something we've overlooked for far too long:

We train our bodies. Why don't we train our minds?

Let's start with one of the most important muscles of them all.

Presence.

"Mum... look."

I was making dinner.

The dishwasher had just finished.

My phone buzzed.

A work message came in.

Tomorrow's to-do list was already running through my head.

One child was asking for help.

The baby needed me.

Then I heard it.

"Mum... look."

I answered without looking.

"One second."

A minute later...

"Mum... look."

Again.

"Just let me finish this."

Then, for a third time...

"Mum... look."

This time I looked up.

She wasn't asking for help.

She wasn't upset.

She simply wanted me to watch her spin around the living room with the biggest smile on her face.

And that's when it hit me.

I had been in the room the whole time.

But I hadn't really been there.

The biggest distraction isn't your phone.

It's your own mind.

Most of us spend our days somewhere else.

Replaying yesterday.

Planning tomorrow.

Thinking about work while we're with our family.

Thinking about home while we're at work.

Our body is in one place.

Our attention is somewhere else.

And life quietly passes in between.

What neuroscience tells us

Our brains are prediction machines.

They're constantly scanning for problems, planning ahead, replaying conversations and preparing for what's next.

That ability has helped us survive.

But in today's world, it often pulls us away from the only moment we can actually experience:

Right now.

The good news?

Attention is trainable.

Just like a physical muscle, every time you deliberately bring your attention back to the present, you're strengthening the neural pathways that make presence easier the next time.

Not perfectly.

Just a little better.

One rep at a time.

The smallest moments matter most

Presence isn't about meditating for an hour.

It's not about living a perfectly balanced life.

It's about noticing.

Looking into someone's eyes when they're talking.

Taking one deep breath before replying.

Feeling the warmth of your morning coffee instead of scrolling your phone.

Watching your child spin around the living room as if it's the greatest performance you've ever seen.

Those moments seem small.

Until one day you realise...

They're actually your life.

For years, I searched for more information.

More books.

More podcasts.

More advice.

But information didn't change me.

Practice did.

That's why I created Pepper.

Not another app that gives you more to read.

A daily mental gym that helps you understand how your brain works and then guides you through simple Mental Reps you can actually do.

Just five minutes a day.

Some reps you'll repeat again and again.

On purpose.

Because repetition is how the brain changes.

The goal isn't to become perfect.

The goal is to become a little more present today than you were yesterday.

This week's Mental Rep

Today, I want to challenge you to do just one thing.

The next time someone says:

"Look."

Pause.

Put your phone down.

Take one breath.

And really look.

You might discover that the moment you almost missed...

...becomes the one you remember.

Because at the end of our lives, we won't wish we'd answered one more email.

We'll wish we'd been more present for the moments that mattered.

🌶️ Train your brain. Or your brain trains you.

Add Pepper.
